Special crossover music, chosen by Ton Maas. Mad about spinning
Swedish band leader Johannes Geworkian Hellman is what you would call mad about his instrument, the hurdy-gurdy. This Medieval instrument is making a strong comeback, that started some thirty years ago and was set in motion by Frenchman Valentin Clastrier. Hellman is one of the many young players that are indebted to Clastier, but each go their distinct own way. In late February, Helmaan performed during the fifth Celtic & Balfolk Night in Rotterdam twice: once as a duo, called Symbio, and in the trio Garizim.
