Musical footwork.
To the Canadian sisters Emmanuelle en Pastelle LeBlanc [see photograph] it’s the most natural thing in the world: while singing and playing their instruments (violin, accordion, mandolin and flute) they produce an entire rhythm section by stamping their feet on the floor. In the small community of Acadiens on Prince Edward Island on the Canadian east coast, foot percussion is an old tradition. This is different for American Nic Gareiss. As a child of the city he became fascinated by folk dance when visiting a festival with his parents, he particularly liked the virtuoso footwork. By blending various styles, he developed his own form of dance which he makes audible during performances and recordings of his group This is How We Fly, by using a wooden plate that has contact microphones attached to it.
