Composer: Mikis Theodorakis

Interesting albums from the folk and roots music history, by Marius Roeting.

The debut CD Chtes ta kaname of the group Ano Kato from Groningen ensured that the Netherlands got a broader view on Greek music. The acquaintance with Greek music was often limited to Mikis Theodorakis and the entertainment music played in Greek restaurants. The trio Ano Kato, however, gave us insight into contemporary traditional and contemporary folk music from Greece with their debut in 1992. The rebetika, the Greek blues, was put in the shop window, as well as the nisiotika, popular songs and music from the islands. Except performing music themselves, the members of the group also gave information, lectures, courses and workshops etc. etc. They cooperated in diverse documentaries on Dutch television – they provided the music for the Teleac course New Greek, but also abroad and in the Greek archipelago they appeared multiple times on TV and the radio. Chtes ta kaname means freely translated ‘yesterday we turned everything upside down’ and that is exactly what Ano Kato did. The debut was a relief: it sounded authentic by true Dutchmen, but still with their own touch. Ano Kato got imitators, but the big boom never came. A changing of the guard followed and by doing so, the focus shifted, also musically. A second and provisional last CD appeared around the turn of the century. No spectacular productivity on disc, but the current formation, a quintet, is still active, both in performance and informative. Chtes ta kaname is a document of time which deserves attention and that’s why they are in the broadcast of Disc-Cover.
