sat 19 sep 2020 20:00 hour

Jazz, blues and nostalgia, by Sjaak Roodenburg.

From the bedroom of The Palace, Saturday 20h00. With ‘Dream a little dream of me’ (Nat King Cole), ‘Close your eyes’ (Peggy Lee) and ‘Lullaby of Birdland’ (Sarah Vaughan)

Also nightly worrying: ‘Deep in a dream’ (Frank Sinatra waking up from a dream about a deceased beloved), ‘Empty bed blues’ (Bessie Smith, about waking up in the bed from which her man has disappeared), blues veteran Lonnie Johnson (’Through a long and sleepless night’), WOODY GUTHRIE about the night of a train roamer (‘Hobo’s lullaby’) and gospel group The Soul Stirrers about the eternal rest after a hard life (‘I want to rest’).

More light-hearted: Gerry Mulligan Quartet about the rustling of the leaves (‘Lullaby of the leaves’).

Furthermore, trumpet player Blue Mitchell (‘I’ll close my eyes’), Wim Sonneveld with Lia Dorana, Emmy Arbous and Hetty Blok in ’Slaapwandelaars’, and tenor saxophone player John Coltrane playing sweetly about his sleeping sweetheart (‘While my lady sleeps’)

In short, one hour filled with all sorts of aspects of nightly existence, concluding with saxophone player Sonny Stitt & trombone player Bennie Green (’The night has a thousand eyes’)
