Holland Jazz

Dutch Jazz on CD, compiled by Jan Verwey.

Theme:  jazz pianists, part 1.

Tonight, and in de next few programmes,
I give and will give attention to the pianists with which
the Netherlands is covered.
We start with Robert Rook, a special customer
in our jazz ‘park’. Schooled in mathematics, a maths teacher.
But his whole life he has played the piano, and he has
developed into a fantastic jazz performer.
Sometimes, he seems to convert mathematic formulas
into intricate sequences of harmonies, but beautiful to listen to
for jazz lovers.
Next, Mike del Ferro, also a jazz veteran, who has already flown a few times around the globe. This CD he has recorded in South Africa with local musicians.
It has become a beautiful album.
Floris Kappeyne is a newcomer, certainly compared to the two pianists formerly mentioned. He plays his own, beautiful compositions with his trio, which includes bass player Tijs Klaassen and drummer Wouter Kühne. Two pieces have been written by Tijs Klaassen.
Finally in this broadcast on pianists, maybe the most famous:
Peter Beets. He often played in the US, and his trio also includes a bass player,
Tom Baldwin, and a drummer, Eric Kennedy, who are both from the US. It is also the country where the album was recorded; an enjoyable CD, full of Gershwin pieces.
