Ghosts and Nightly Troubles in the Palace. We will listen to The Five Jones Boys with ‘Mr. Ghost goes to town’, Artie Shaw’s band with ‘Nightmare’, there is a Hawaiian ghost dance, and Kay Starr sings about a ‘Headless Horseman’ in a remarkable recording.
This hour is all about superstition, ghost appearances, black magic, and black cats crossing the path.
We will hear Johnny Cash with a cowboy legend about an old cowboy who – while he is resting – sees a herd of cows running through the sky (‘Ghost riders in the sky’), blues veteran Ma Rainey in ‘Black cat hoot owl blues’, and Nat King Cole with ‘The magic song’.
Peggy Lee with the theme song of the TV series ‘Bewitched’, Cab Calloway talks about the demise of Old Smokey – who was married to Minnie the Moocher, ‘The Ghost of Smokey Eye’.
And to temper the fears again: ‘Whistling in the dark’ by Sam Lanin.
