Jazz, blues and nostalgia, by Sjaak Roodenburg.
We have a historic musical lucky bag in The Palace; this programme features Blossom Dearie, Julie London, the Flemish bard Zjef Vanuytsel who sings about his childhood’s town, which has become a ‘dorp vol venijn’ (a town full of venom). Billie Holiday comforts us (‘Weep no more’).
From the early days of jazz, you’ll hear the ‘jazzologist supreme’ and multi-instrumentalist Boyd Senter featuring guitar genius Eddie Lang in the smiling ‘Just so-so’.
And from the same musical universe, you’ll hear the New Orleans clarinet player, Johnny Dodds featuring piano player Tiny Parham.
Following suit, the humourous Animal Crackers, and their album ‘band zonder stekkers’ (band without plugs)
Furthermore, you’ll hear the duo Johnny & Jones (‘The fletter the plete’) AndrĂ© Claveau, Wim Sonneveld in English (‘Fly me to the moon’), the Metropole Orkest, Melody Gardot and Raphael Gualazzi give new life to ‘the bare necessities’ from ‘Jungle Book’.
And finally, we’ll focus on the death of a woman who built a copy of the Eiffel Tower in her living room, but gained fame making music: Phylis McGuire, the last of the famous McGuire Sisters.
