The Return of the King
In 1989, clarinettist Ivo Papasov and his Bulgarian Wedding Band were an instant sensation at the Music Meeting Festival in Nijmegen. 33 years later, he returns to Nijmegen with his exhilarating wedding music. Still part of the ensemble after all this time: Papasov’s wife, vocalist Maria Karafizieva, veteran Nesho Neshev on the accordion, guitar virtuoso Ateshgan Yuseinov and master drummer Salif Ali. On today’s broadcast we feature pieces from Papasov’s breakthrough album Orpheus Ascending from 1989 and a selection of later recordings.
