Today’s episode is dedicated to Franz Schubert.
The three great song cycles are among Schubert’s best-known and best-loved works. They can be heard often, both in the concert hall and on CD.
Schubert’s oeuvre also includes a number of shorter song cycles. Sometimes, these are intended as such, in other cases Schubert has combined a number of songs into a cycle for publication.
We will hear three of those cycles. Each group of songs will be followed by a piano piece. In two cases, these involve arrangements that Franz Liszt made of songs by Schubert.
