New CDs with early music. The double CD with Vespro della beata vergine, SV 206 from Claudio Monteverdi by La Tempête conducted by Simon-Pierre Bestion.
‘Il vespro della Beata Virgine’ (Marian vespers) by Claudio Monteverdi is a collection of musical pieces for vocals and instruments, and was released in 1610 in Venice.
Most of the pieces were written with evening prayer in mind.
The Marian vespers are dedicated to Pope Paul V, presumably intended as an application to work at the Papal Chapel. But that did not succeed; Monteverdi did however get an appointment as cantor at San Marco in Venice.
