Morocco: Sharqi, The Oriental music of Morocco.
Morocco is rich in diverse music styles. In this episode we zoom in on a style that was thriving between 1950s and 1970s : the Oriental music of Morocco, locally called ‘Sharqi’. The word “Sharqi” means “Oriental” and refers to the influences from the Middle East -espeically Egypt-, where this style of music originated. The music is based on the typical middle-eastern traditional maqams (modes), certain singing styles and other techniques related to Tarab (the essence of Oriental traditional music). Moroccan composers and singers -some of whom are a bit forgotten- have adopted this music adding a strong Moroccan touch and made (especially between the 1950s and 70s) many successful hits which are loved until today.
Al-Muuti Ben Kasem (1928-2001) performing (at an old age) the very popular Bent lemdina (City girl)
