Richard Strauss’ romantic Lieder.
This episode of Radio Romantica is filled with beautiful Lieder by Richard Strauss.
He was a specialist in this field. Alongside his wide-ranging operas, he wrote intimate scenes for voice and piano. The accompanist must have complete command of the instrument, as the scores are demanding. The singer must be able to switch between the atmosphere of a simple children’s song and that of a vocally demanding operatic scene.
Strauss adored the soprano voice. His major operatic roles are almost always female, and he knew how to make the female voice sound truly at its best, both on the opera stage and in the intimacy of the drawing room.
Anne Schwanewilms offers a number of convincing examples of this, supported by master accompanist Richard Vignoles.
