This year, the Afrika Festival is on July 4 and 5. As always, the festival takes place in the Open Air Theatre in Hertme (Overijssel). In Mariama, festival programmer Rob Lokin looks ahead to the performances.
The festival program features, among others, the Malian guitar virtuoso Vieux Farka Touré, who effortlessly mixes traditional desert blues with rock, funk and improvisation. From Senegal comes Baaba Maal with his warm voice and spiritual songs. Also performing in Hertme is Cheikh Lô, the singer, percussionist and composer who presents a fusion of West African traditions, reggae, rumba, soul and funk.
Rob Lokin is a programme maker at Concertzender and programmer of the Afrika Festival. In Mariama, he plays music by these and other musicians on the programme.
