Sunday evenings have recently taken on a whole new look—a great reason to get acquainted with our new programmes. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be introducing a new programme each week. This week: Bauke van der Wal and his programme Between Your Ears.
My name is Bauke van der Wal, and I’ve been working as a programme maker at the Concertzender since mid-July. Back in the mid-90s, I discovered Kink FM and got in touch with Arjen Grolleman. He taught me the ropes of radio production. I started by co-creating X-Rated with him, and later worked as the compiler and presenter of Heavy Alternative. However, after a few years, I had to choose between making my own music or playing other people’s music; the rest is history, as that was thirty years ago.
The Crosslinks editorial team focusses on music that breaks the mold, and Between Your Ears will be no exception.
As a programme maker, I am currently focusing on this new Sunday evening show. Between Your Ears is broadcast between 22:00 and 23:00 CET and at this point in the evening there is room for music where structure isn’t always easy to pin down, creating space to prioritise sound itself or the emotional experience. While many people rely on rhythms and melodies to make music attractive or comprehensible, Between Your Ears takes a different approach—though that doesn’t mean rhythm and melody are entirely shunned.
The programme isn’t tied to a single style; it can go in any direction. Ambient, drone, noise, soundscapes, field recordings, minimal, electroacoustic, experimental, HNW, power electronics, electronica, musique concrete, neoclassical, industrial, death industrial, plunderphonics, collage, ritual… A journey through a landscape where things aren’t quite what they seem. An hour for deep thoughts, or perhaps to drift away in a daydream.
Listening to this programme is sure to broaden your musical horizons.
