In the ‘International Jazz’ category, the Edison goes to Craig Taborn for the album Dream Archives.
Highlights from the jury report:
Pianist and composer Craig Taborn has distinguished himself for decades with his eclectic compositions and immense instrumental virtuosity within the jazz and improvisation scene. With a precise touch and a keen sense of his instruments’ capabilities, Taborn elicits a wide range of sonic textures from the piano and keyboard.
On Dream Archives, Taborn forms a trio with Tomeka Reid and Ches Smith. It is a perfect match for a new musical journey of discovery in which, while navigating the space between structure and freedom, they explore expansive, electronics-influenced soundscapes.
With four of Taborn’s compositions as a foundation, alongside tributes to Paul Motian and Geri Allen, the trio showcases the full potential of three musicians who constantly challenge and surprise one another. Naturally, there is ample room for improvisation, making Dream Archives a timeless, exciting, colourful, balanced and adventurous masterpiece.
