Jan Verwey, cool jazz on harmonica

thu 6 oct 2022
Theme: Jazz

On Friday 30th September Jan Verwey, jazz musician and programme maker for the Concertzender, passed away. Since 2005 he’d been  making every first and third Saturday of the month the programme ‘Holland Jazz’.

Jan Verwey taught himself to play the harmonica in his youth and made a number of albums from 1982. He also worked together with among others the Skymasters and  the Metropole orchestra.

Jan was  a real bebopper, one of the very few who managed to develop his own sound on the chromatic mouth organ.

As well as being a practising musician he made the radio programme Holland Jazz for the Concertzender. As you would expect from the title, it was a programme about jazz in the Netherlands. He was very impressed by jazz developments here and was a proponent of the genre in his programme.

In all those seventeen years it was very rare that Jan programmed his own material. We asked him to do that in his farewell programme, which was broadcast on .

We shall miss Jan very much and our sincerest condolences go out to his wife Joke.
