This summer, American composer Michael Gordon turned seventy. Theme on Wednesday October 28 at 20:00 CET is dedicated to Michael Gordon’s music, covering everything from his earliest works for his own Michael Gordon Philharmonic to his opera and orchestral compositions.
Gordon has a close connection to the Netherlands and many of his works have premiered here. The composer Louis Andriessen was one of his most important mentors. This autumn, Michael Gordon’s birthday is being celebrated with a new work, titled Andriessen, which he wrote specifically for the ensemble Het Muziek. With this piece, Gordon responds to Hoketus, Andriessen’s classic minimal composition, Het Muziek will perform a number of times including a performance on Thursday October 22 in the Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam (as part of ADE, the Amsterdam Dance Event) and another during the November Music festival in Den Bosch.
As part of the Michael Gordon marathon at the November Music festival (on Sunday, November 22), there will also be concerts by the Bang on a Can All-Stars and the ensemble Yarn/Wire. Michael Gordon is one of the co-founders of the renowned New York-based organisation Bang on a Can, alongside composers David Lang and Julia Wolfe.
In his energetic music, Gordon builds intricate bridges between the rigor of minimal music, the vitality of art rock and the open-ended nature of jazz.
