Frans Elsen was a key figure in Dutch jazz: a pioneering bebop pianist, composer, arranger and educator who influenced generations of musicians. His composition Otta was part of his “Norwegian Cycle,” inspired by a trip to Norway in 1970. Written in the early 1970s for his electric septet, the piece combines jazz, funk and elements of free jazz and features Elsen’s Fender Rhodes as the central instrument. Otta showcases Elsen’s adventurous side and his willingness to explore new sounds within the Dutch jazz scene.
