The Palace of Nostalgia

thu 27 oct 2016 06:00

Jazz, blues and nostalgia, by Sjaak Roodenburg.

With his bronzed whiskey voice, Ken Nordine would narrate documentaries and commercials, but he also made some wonderful albums of poetic lyrics on jazz music. The movie  – Chaplin’s ‘A king in New York’ – wasn’t much, but harmonica virtuoso Larry Adler made a terrifying recording with music from the film. Also, Frank Sinatra who while staring through a window, thinks over his life on lyrics by Rod McKuen, Furthermore, the Saxophone Soctette of documentary orchestra the Beau Hunks,  Artie Shaw’s big band hit ‘Frenesie’ and the first version of this song by Mexican Adelina Garcia, the ‘British Jo Stafford’ Jean Campbell, psychedelic experimenting music artist Darell DeVore, ‘King of Jazz’ Paul Whiteman, Connee Boswell, and a beautiful rendition of ‘I’ll be seeing you’ by Johnny Mathis, and from over a hundred years ago, the ‘Kunstreiter Galopp’ by Albert Müller. In short, old music sounding new and new music with an old soul.
