Damas del Tango, episode 12: Adriana Varela.
The Damas del Tango series puts female tango singers in the spotlights. Episode 12 is devoted to Adriana Varela. Her tango career started in 1986 and she recorded her first album in 1991.
In the world of classic tango she has often been criticized. People were of the opinion that her voice was not a singing voice, but a gravelly speaking voice. She appealed to the younger generation precisely because of that voice, and also because of her sensual charisma and performance: in turn languid, ratty, faltering and exaggeratedly passionate. Adriana Varela made it seem natural. With countless other singers after her, it became a cliché.
Adriana Varela has been compared to Edith Piaf, and the latter should take that as a compliment. In the long term, she was an important link between traditional tango and modern neotango.
