Tonight at Orient Express, the typical music of Shashmaqam from Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Shashmaqam means “six moods” and is a collection of six suites, with a total of 250 music pieces. The titles of the moods are Buzruk, Rast, Nawa, Dugah, Segah, and Iraq. In the days of the Emirs of Bukhara, the Shashmaqam developed as court music, mainly in Bukhara and Samarkand. In the Middle Ages, these cites were at the centre of multicultural society in Central Asia.
Shashmaqam was played by specially trained musicians. The Uzbek, Tajiki and Jewish musical dynasties further developed the Shashmaqam into highly refined art. In 2003, Shashmaqam was put on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
