Jazz, blues and nostalgia, by Sjaak Roodenburg.
We find out how sexy a sax can be, by listening to André Popp, aka ‘The Original Radio Girl’ Vaughn DeLeath, aka ‘The Ukulele Lady’, who was made famous in the pioneer years of radio, but fell from grace in the days of the Crisis, in which her drinking played a huge part. Also, a wonderful cooperation between Jo Stafford and Nat King Cole, Jim Reeves on a woman who send him to death row, and Esther Philips laments the man who gave her the blues. From the dawning of jazz, clarinet and saxophone player Prince Robinsons with the overwhelming McKinney’s Cotton Pickers, and music from the Fellini film ‘Otto e mezzo’, guitar genius Dick McDonough, who died very young, band leader Freddy Martin, nick-named ‘Mister Silvertone’, and his spirited big band collegue Artie Shaw and some extra attention for 100-year-old ‘Sweetheart of the Forces’ Vera Lynn.
