The Night: World Music

sun 17 sep 2017 00:00 hrs

A whole night dedicated to world music manufactured in the Netherlands.

1- Dutch World Music, vol 1.

Dutch World Music: a compilation album from 2017 with some of the best Dutch musicians. The album is of a remarkably high quality, we’d even like to call it world class. The first CD contains the most accessible music, such as Tango Dorado, Caiman and Nikitov, but also 10 other acts from all quarters of the world who all make passionate music at top level. On the second CD are Wilma Paalman, Laduraya, Baraná and the New Cool Collective Big Band live in concert with fenomenal kora player Ali Boulo Santo from Senegal and afro drummer Tony Allen.

CD: Dutch World Music, Vol. 1. Label: Casa de Musica NL (2007), code: 95539.

2-Mazzeltov/Rolinha Kross.

Amsterdam by klezmer band Mazzeltov/Rolinha Kross. With singer Rolinha Kross as leading lady the band primarily focuses on the Yiddish song. A lot of this music originated as a mixture of Yiddish music and Eastern European folk music. Mazzeltov keeps this tradition alive. They play gems from the old Yiddish repertoire but extend the music to modern times by their own compositions, Yiddish poems and now and then Yiddish translations of contemporary songs.

CD: Mazzeltov | Rolinha Kross. Label: Fréa Records / Music & Words NL (2008), code: MWCD 4058.

3-ORCHESTRA.

The 7 musicians of ORCHESTRA combine cultures and fuse them together. The album’s title refers to ORCHESTRA’s method of working: short but sweet. The musicians interpret Afghan, Uzbek, Bulgarian, Yemeni, Peruvian and Chinese songs in their own unique way. It turns out that musical expressions from all times and cultures show more similarities than differences.

CD: Echo’s van Overal – ORCHESTRA. Label: Self Published, NL 2002.

4-De Bende van Drie.

De Bende van Drie consists of saxophone player Onno van Swigchem, accordion player Pieter Jan Cramer van den Bogaart and double bass player Dion Nijland. They once started out as a street band and they still like to have a direct connection with their audience. They themselves say about their music: It’s played from the heart with a great love for improvisation. When dusk falls on the Balkan, the blood of this gang runs differently than it does in broad daylight. This is music for the night, when the day’s events easily disappear by the sounds of this company.

CD: Stromen – de Bende van Drie. Label: Lop Lop Records NL (2007), code: LLR024.

5-De Nazaten on Stage.

De Nazaten are a festive Surinamese/Dutch group, national supplier of so called ‘bastard wind music’, grafted onto Surinamese kaseko, jazz, Antillean waltzes, fado, klezmer, European brass band music, mardi grass, calypso and improvised music. De Nazaten’s full name used to be ‘De Nazaten van Prins Hendrik’, named after Dutch Queen Wilhelmina’s husband who was notorious for his extramarital relations. The orchestra’s name vaguely reminds us of music by wind orchestra’s and brass bands, the TRIS band (Troups In Suriname) and the Police band of Paramaribo.

CD: On Stage – De Nazaten. Label: Pan Records NL (2007), code: PAN042.

6-Baraná Trio.

Turkish-Groningen singer/saz player/percussionist Behsat Uvez, clarinet player/saxophonist Steven Kamperman and accordion player Bart Lelivelt have different musical backgrounds, but in Baraná Trio their traditions have proved to fuse together perfectly. Uvez, who died in 2013, had lived in the Netherlands since 1989 and showed himself a versatile improvisator and virtuoso instrumentalist in countless cross-border projects ever since. Kamperman’s roots are in jazz, but non-Western folk music has also been a very important inspiration to him for many years now. Lelivelt is a specialist in contemporary music on the accordion and a much in demand improvisator in folk music.

CD: Gül ve Bülbül (de Rose en de Nachtegaal) – Baraná Trio. Label: Lop Lop Records NL (2009), code: LLr023.
