New releases of Piri Reis, Elemotho, Karim Baggili and Tamikrest
For today: Ottoman maqam of Piri Reis, the CD Beautiful World of the Namibian singer Elemotho, Apollo You Sixteen, Part 2 of Karim Baggili and the new CD Kidal of Tamikrest.
Piri Reis came into existence during a music session of six days with five musicians on the Greek island of Crete.
Michiel van der Meulen is the composer and arranger of all played songs, in a style which he himself calls contemporary modal music. He was taught by Ross Daly, thé specialist in the field of modal compositions.

Elemotho is a singer-songwriter, guitarist and m’bira player, originating from the Kalahari desert in Namibia, a country which became independent of South Africa in 1990.
On his new album Beautiful World he is accompanied by guitarist Sam Bathola from Congo Brazzaville. They both sing traditional and Namibian choir songs in Setwana, as in other Namibian languages, but also in English.

Karim Baggili is a Belgian guitar and ud player, but also composer, singer, arranger. He released a new CD: Apollo You Sixteen part 2. On this CD Baggili also has composed and arranged all music. There are a bit more sung songs, the CD is in its entirety a worthy successor to his first Apollo You Sixteen.

The title of the CD Kidal of Tamikrest directs to a city in Mali which is surrounded by a desert on all sides. It’s the city where Tamikrest came together for the first time to play. Kidal is their fourth CD and is with the call for rebellion, pure Toeareg music.
