Hawaiian Music – The Real Stuff!! – Part 22
Sweet Sweet Steel Guitar
In this episode you will hear Ken Ufton, Jerry Byrd, Rudi Wairata, David Keli’i, Pua Almeida, Coy Pereira, Pale K. Lua, Ben Hokea, and Frank Ferrera.
The Canadian Tom Shilstra (born in America, Los Angeles in 1908) was idolatrous of Hawaiian music and decided to establish a record label after his retirement to be able to release an album in the series called: Sweet Sweet Steel Guitar, featuring all top Hawaiian guitarists, both active and historic, worldwide. The record lable’s name would be ‘Maple’. He spotted all English, American and Hawaiian guitarists, which he deemed to be important. That’s why stars from the Netherlands also appear on the album, like Rudi Wairata and Coy Pereira. Even the composer of this programme was on his wishlist. Sadly, it didn’t come this far, because after volume 16 (!), from 1984, it was over. Two years later Tom had passed away (1986).
Tom Shilstra put a magnificent series of records on the market and was helped by his friends from the ‘Hawaiian scene’ in doing so. He knew many of them because of the annual recurring festivals a.o. in St. Louis, organized by the ‘Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association’ (HSGA) in St. Louis, where Mike ‘Malahini’ Scott was often found, and also Dirk Vogel from Minneapolis (Minnesota), who originates from the Netherlands, with his Steel Guitar Club ‘Aloha International’. But in Hawaii too, Tom had many contacts. These were often invited to the different famous annual meetings in America which lasted for days. Dirk Vogel, who developed himself to the ‘walking encyclopedia’ for everyone who wanted to know something about the history of the Hawaiian Music, and Mike Scott often wrote the texts of the LP’s’ covers.
From a number of these LP’s we will broadcast some recordings in our next show for you, namely:
