Genius Music Friends

thu 14 feb 2019 11:00 hrs

Part X. In the ‘Genius Music Friends’ series, Thijs Bonger looks into the results of the close contact between Haydn en Mozart.

In part X we first continue with the new series of string quartets that Haydn wrote, partly influenced by Mozart. These string quartets, opus 50, were commissioned by the music-loving king of Prussia, Frederick William II (pictured). He was insatiable when it came to music and ordered one composition after the other. One of his suppliers was Boccherini. Mozart also tried to get his share and traveled to Berlin optimistically. Today we will hear music commissioned by the king.

1. Joseph Haydn. String Quartet in E flat, opus 50/3 parts 2, 3 and 4.
Tokyo Quartet.

2. Luigi Boccherini. String Quartet in c, opus 51 no. 1 part 3.
The Revolutionary Drawing Room.

3. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. ‘Dupont Variaties’, KV 573.
Bart van Oort, fortepiano.

4. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. String Quartet in D, KV 575 parts 1 and 3.
Prazak Quartet.
