Pianist Elmo Hope (1923 – 1967), whose influences included
Bud Powell, started an R & B band after he finished school and
proceeded to accompany singer Etta Jones. After that he mainly
worked as a freelance musician. From 1954 onward he recorded a few
albums for Blue Note and Prestige under his own name. Besides
the trio recordings a few quintet pieces were recorded as well,
of which the composition included saxophone players Frank Foster
