The Palace of Nostalgia

sat 13 apr 2019 13:00 hrs

Jazz, blues and nostalgia, by Sjaak Roodenburg.

Featuring the mega-obscure Laurie Allyn (a model, who made one album, in 1956, which wasn’t released until 2007 and then almost won a Grammy Award). Also obscure: Wim Sonneveld with the melancholic ‘6 uur in Amsterdam’ and saxophone player Tony Vos (who has on occasion been compared to Coltrane) who turned out to be a quite a nice crooner as well. On top of that the indestructible Anita O’Day, an early Mel Tormé (pictured), Raymond Scott who threads together classic themes with his Quintette, the Orkest Ger Daalhuizen, music from the film ’The Third Man’, the higher education of the singing out of tune and making music by Jonathan & Darlene Edwards, rurality by Hoagy Carmichael, a summery Harry Belafonte, Frans Halsema with ‘Ik ben nou nog springlevend’, Edith Piaf gazing out of the window despondently in ‘Bal dans ma rue’ and the band van Jack Hylton that conjures up raindrops.
