Carl Reinecke
The two quartets by Carl Reinecke that are on today’s programme were written after those of Johannes Brahms who was nine years younger. The atmosphere of these works though, is rather reminiscent of the music by Robert Schumann. The Third String Quartet in C major, opus 132 was completed by Reinecke in 1874. At the time, he had ended his work as a pianist and piano teacher in Copenhagen and Cologna and had been working as the principal conductor of the Gewandhaus orchestra in Leipzig for quite some time. He fulfilled the position of professor of composition at the conservatory there until his retirement in 1895 and trained many composers. It is very likely that the Fifth String Quartet in g minor, opus 287 was written just after 1890, but it was only released in 1910, after his death. We will even occasionally identify a touch of Brahms.
