Sami yoikers from the far North are finding their way south
The Skáidi duo was one of the surprises at the Norwegian FFørdefestival, which I visited a couple of years ago. The traditional – without lyrics – songs by Inga Juuso were combined with the jazzy double bass by Steinar Raknes in an unexpected way. These days, there is young Saami Marja Mortensson whose yoiks are accompanied by the tuba.
