The Wandering Microphone

wed 20 nov 2019 02:00 hrs

Field recordings and historical recordings by Jan Kruit and Maxim Chapochnikov. Tanzania : music of the Wagogo

In this episode of the Wandering Microphone we will pay attention to the music of the Wagogo, a group of indigenous Bantu people living in the heart of Tanzania.

The Wagogo people have a rich oral tradition in which dance and music play a key role. Their music is particularly known for its hypnotising, polyphonic vocal parts, which are performed on several social happenings like harvest, circumcision and also just for the fun of it. The polyphonic vocals are accompanied by percussion as well as typical Gogo instruments like the ilimba and the izeze.
