The Seeger family

The Seeger family has been entwined with music as performers, composers and scholars for generations. Not only have they played an important role in the revival of American folk music, they have also written influential classical works. Today we’ll listen to compositions and songs by Charles Seeger, his wife Ruth Crawford Seeger and son Pete Seeger.


1 – Charles Seeger. John Hardy. Schönberg Ensemble led by Oliver Knussen.

2 – Ruth Crawford Seeger. String Quartet. Marijke van Kooten and Heleen Hulst, violin. Karin Dolman, viola. Hans Woudenberg, cello.

3 – Ruth Crawford Seeger. Nineteen American Folk Songs: 1-12. Virginia Eskin, piano.

4 – Pete Seeger. We shall overcome; If I had a hammer; Turn, turn, turn!; Goodnight Irene; Guantanamera. Pete Seeger, song and banjo.

5 – Ruth Crawford Seeger. Music for small orchestra. Schönberg Ensemble led by Oliver Knussen.
