The night before Haydn embarked on his great English adventure, he sang a newly composed song to Mozart. Touched by the subdued beauty of it, programme maker Thijs Bongers wondered why Haydn’s songs are seldom heard. He went on a search to find out whether this neglect is justified. It appears that Haydn wrote about fifty songs, and among them are real treasures. Thijs’ search left him with so many beautiful songs that he dedicates two programmes to them.
