In 1920, Perry Bradford was responsible for the first gramophone recording of a black blues singer: Mamie Smith. It turned out to be a mega success for Smith and Bradford. Bradford went on to make many recordings with his own bands.

 

In this episode you will hear recordings from 1925-1927 of various Bradford bands, including recordings with Jimmy Wade on the trumpet.
