Chamber music of Max Reger: Piano Quintet Op. 64 and Clarinet Sonata in F-sharp minor Op. 49.
An hour of chamber music of the little played composer Max Reger in Radio Romantica, and an encore of Brahms. Reger himself was very enthusiastic about his large-scale piano quintet. He told his publisher that this music represented a new trend, so it was going to be very successful in selling. In his diary, he told the story of the premiere of his piano quintet and the enormous enthusiasm of the audience. Musicians usually dread the complexity of his music, resulting in only few performances of particularly his chamber music. We try to do something about that, by also playing the 2nd Clarinet Sonata of Reger in this episode of Radio Romantica. Before writing it, Reger listened attentively to the lyric pieces of Brahms for the same instruments, so a short piano piece of Brahms had to be the encore of this programme.
