The Art of the Improvisers

fri 23 oct 2020 03:00 hrs

International avant-garde.

The 81-year-old musician Charles Gayle is chiefly known as a free-jazz saxophone player. Besides, he is also a praiseworthy pianist.

Tonight, you hear two sides of his piano playing. One side: solo performances of standards which Gayle remembers from his youth; in these performances, he sticks relatively close to the melodies and chord schemes. The other side: free improvisation music; we hear him playing in London, in 2015, with bass player John Edwards and percussionist Roger Turner.

Rerun of 19 September last.
