Between Swing and Bop

thu 5 nov 2020 18:00 hrs

Four musicians who changed from the Swing Era to Bop!!

What do Wardell Gray, Mary Lou Williams, Buddy DeFranco and Serge Chaloff have in common?
The four of them all began their career in the Swing Era, but finely ended up playing Bop.
We hear saxophone player Wardell Gray (and pianist Mary Lou Williams) with the Goodman sextet in 1948, and next we hear him with one of his own quartets (1949) and with the sextet with Art Farmer (1953).
Mary Lou Williams as stride piano soloist (1930) in a bop quartet with English accompanists (1953), and with bass player Buster Williams in 1973.
Clarinet player Buddy DeFranco on two very different recordings from 1949 and a bop quartet with pianist Sonny Clarke from 1954.
And we conclude giving ample attention to baritone saxophone player Serge Chaloff on recordings from 1946 to 1956.

Benny’s Bop, Twisted, April Skies
Night Life, Lady Bird, Pale Blue
The Boy Next Door, Aishie, Yesterdays
