Traditional music from Afghanistan, Persia & Turkey.

1- On this album, from a French label, is a concise compendium of traditional Afghan music, including the zither and other local string instruments, as well as the Indian tabla. Afghan classical music will remind the listener of the music of Central Asia, India, Pakistan and even China, harking back to a time when Afghanistan was a land of international trade, culture and tribal religion. For those who want to know about an Afghanistan that time has forgotten, this disc is a good choice. **CD. Afghanistan. Label: Air Mail Music (2000), code: SA 141052 | VIDEO

2- Kayhan Kalhor, born in Tehran, is a master of kamancheh, a Persian upright violin with a beautiful mournful sound. After collaborating with sitar player Shujaat Husain Khan in the Persian-Indian hybrid ensemble Ghazal, Kalhor has now embarked on an exploration of Turkish musical traditions. The Wind places Kalhor in a mesmerizing dialogue with a new collaborator, Erdal Erzincan, master of the bağlama or saz, a plucked string instrument that resembles a lute. Together they evoke an ancient cry that spans much of West and Central Asia, from Turkey to Iran. **CD. The wind – Kayhan Kalhor & Erdal Erzincan. Label: ECM Records (2006), code:  9856354 | VIDEO
