Radio Romantica

mon 15 mar 2021 12:00 hrs

Musical Romanticism, explored by Pieter de Oude.

Chamber music by the Hungarian composer Ernst von Dohnanyi.

Today, Radio Romantica is dedicated to chamber music by the Hungarian Ernö
Dohnányi, also known as Ernst von Dohnanyi. He was born in 1877 and was an incredible master piano player. He travelled throughout Europe and even went to the US. His chamber music was of exceptional quality. The sextet, which consisted of a violin, viola, cello, clarinet, horn, and piano, was unique. And much thought went into the music itself, which means that all of the instruments shine in their own right. Besides that, Dohnányi favoured a piano quintet instead of a string quartet and a piano. We’ll listen to his second piano quintet, Opus 26, from 1914. Here you can also hear that a lot of thought went into the music, and you’ll be able to hear the well-thought-out style in the great tradition of the romantic piano quintet, like Schumann, Brahms, and Dvorak did before him. By means of an encore, you’ll listen to a part of the Serenade for string trio.
