Dutch Jazz on CD, compiled by Jan Verwey.
Theme: Old and new CDs, two of each.
The two older CDs are both from 1991; one is released by the hardbop quintet Ben van den Dungen and Jarmo Hoogendijk; they were among the most popular bands. The CD is called: ‘Run for your Wife’. Great solos and great musicians.
The other older album is the best album the Dick de Graaf Septet has ever made. It’s called: ‘Polder’. The combination of instruments is quite unusual: violin/trombone/sax, and piano, guitar, bass, and drums. Very unique.
We’ll also listen to two new CDs. First, we’ll hear the latest release by Sven Schuster’s Amstel Big Band. Sven wrote and arranged all the songs. The orchestra has two new members: a rapper and a beatboxer.
And finally, we’ll listen to pianist Coen Molenaar’s new band, Tristan. They play a combination of soul and jazz. Jaycilee Teterissa is their singer. Together, they have a unique timbre.
