The Source of Sound 66, More Cassettes from Uganda
This episode is a continuation of an episode about cassettes from Uganda from 2016, the importance of those cassettes for the local music, and their absence from audio archives. (Please check out the following link for the first episode: https://www.concertzender.nl/programma/de_klankbron_360035/ )
Regretfully, things haven’t gotten better for cassette recordings, even regarding Dutch cassettes, never mind cassettes that generally feature more exciting music. Today, we’ll listen to pop and traditional music from Uganda, with unique energetic rhythms from the Baganda, an Acholi likembe or thumb piano orchestra, and a song by the master of nanga (zither) songs Ogwang Clipper, who died last year. All of these songs come from locally produced cassettes.
