Stubborn Student

mon 10 may 2021 12:00 hrs

The bumpy relationship between Beethoven and Haydn

In today’s episode of ‘Stubborn Student’, we’ll listen to the unmeasurably rich imagination of Beethoven. He felt quite at home when there was a lot of variation in the music because he was an unequalled improviser. He wrote the first song we’ll listen to when he was twenty years old; here, he showed his skill playing the ‘Righini’ Variations WoO 65. After that, we’ll listen to his sunny Octet for wind instruments, Op. 103. We’ll end with two early songs.

Ludwig van Beethoven: Variations in D major on Righini’s aria ‘Venni amore’ WoO 65

John Ogdon, piano

Ludwig van Beethoven: Octet in E-flat major, Op. 103

The Albion Ensemble

Ludwig van Beethoven: ‘Schilderung eines Mädchens’ WoO 107

‘Trinklied’ WoO 109

Hermann Prey, baritone

Heinrich-Schütz-Kreis Berlin conducted by Wolfgang Matkowitz (WoO 109)

Leonard Hokanson, piano
