Folk- en Ceremonial music from Cambodia.
Traditional Cambodian ceremonial orchestras can be divided into two groups: orchestras composed of string and wind instruments and orchestras that are mainly percussion ensembles with metallophones, gongs and clef xylophones (pinpeat orchestras). This album, recorded between 1966 and 1968, contains both. Historically, the pinpeat orchestras, often with hundreds of musicians, played ceremonial music for the Brahmins (the highest caste) or the king. This recording captures the essence of the distinctive musical forms that have existed since the 11th century. CD. Cambodia: Folk and Ceremonial Music. Label: Unesco (1996), code: D 8068.
