Nepal: Ritual and Entertainment – Various artists.
Until the 18th century, the Kingdom of Nepal consisted of several smaller kingdoms. It became a parliamentary monarchy in 1990 and a federal republic in 2007. Nepali music is used in ritual and entertainment to signify lunar calendar events, the seasons, and agricultural cycles. While the music for dance repeats melodic and rhythmic patterns, the music for religious ceremonies often contains free flowing, improvised melodies.
