The Trio Qasyon appeared as a guest at Acoustic Roots on 17 November 2017 (repeat)
Trio Qasyon consists of two Syrian sisters: Jawa Manla: vocals and ud, Shaza Manla: qanun and Jacobus Thiele: percussion. They play mainly oriental music (Arabic and Turkish), both classical and folk, as well as popular Arabic music (e.g. Um Kultum).
Ud player Jawa Manla is one of the greatest musical talents in Syria. She already toured as a professional musician in Egypt, Lebanon, Oman and Turkey at a very young age. Jawa is currently studying at Codarts in Rotterdam and has become a familiar face on the Dutch stages.
Jawa’s younger sister Shaza Manla plays the qanun. The qanun is related to the cimbalom and is also called the Arabic harp. The name of the trio Qasyon refers to the highest mountain in Syria.
