Episode: Womex expo as musical climate conference

‘Climate’ is a powerful umbrella term which covers many different meanings. When you use the term ‘pop-cultural climate’, you end up going from bad to worse. At least in the Netherlands, where anglo-american pop determines the weather forecast. Think of Hilversum, the Top 2000, music reviews in daily and weekly tabloids. While we are extensively informed about the economic and political climate elsewhere in the world, a strong retro-western wind is blowing on all those music editors. A visit to the Womex fair will have you feeling better for good. The Worldwide Music Expo, which is Womex’s full name, is an annual event that is organised somewhere in Europe. From Berlin (1994) to Rotterdam, Seville, Copenhagen, Budapest and last October in Porto. On the one hand, Womex is an exponent of the globalisation that has been around since the end of the 1980s, and on the other, it is the manifestation of an underground music scene that is claiming its place. During this vibrant beehive of concerts, films and panels, you are instantly connected to the ‘other world’. A sound garden that offers fantastic fusions and tantalising perspectives. But above all, the certainty that the popular music world is bigger than Adele, De Dijk and Queen. Of which act.
