The Night: World Music

sat 4 dec 2021 01:00 hour

With music by Solia (Belgium), Klezmokum (Netherlands), Amina Alaoui (Morocco), Jensen & Bugge (Denmark), The Secret Trio (Turkey, Armenia, Macedonia) Kaiorda (Italy).

1-
Solia.
The exquisite combination between an accordion and a nyckelharpa to subtly relive the tradition of music in Wallonia (Belgium). Solia distributes and rearranges musical treasures from their homeland. They bring to life traditional melodies and songs whose manuscripts are kept in museums or lost in attics. CD. Tous les parfums – Solia. LABEL: Home Records (2021), code: 4446244. VIDEO

2- Klezmokum.
Founded in Amsterdam in 1989 by composer, pianist, arranger Burton Greene together with clarinetist Marcel Salomon – who has been “drenched” in Jewish cultural music all his life. Listening to Klezmokum is traveling the world through traditional Jewish cultures, entering a past world and then returning through the rhythmic vitality and spontaneity of improvised jazz to the present reality. CD. Jew-azzic park – Klezmokum. LABEL: BVHaast (1995), code: CD 9506. VIDEO

3- Amina Alaoui.
Unlike most of her North African colleagues, the Moroccan Amina Alaoui sings the age-old songs alone, accompanied only by ud and violin. This transparent line-up gives her all the freedom to richly decorate the beautiful melodies. Her masterly fellow players add their own imaginative decorations. A relaxed, subtle and sublime interplay. CD. Alcantara – Amina Alaoui. LABEL: Ethnic (1998), code: B 6872. VIDEO

4- Jensen & Bugge.
Is the story of the Danish Mette Kathrine Jensen Stærk (accordion) and Kristian Bugge (violin) who grew up in the same neighbourhood, but first met at the conservatory and in 2001 formed the duo Jensen & Bugge. As a duo they are one of Denmark’s most successful duos in traditional instrumental Danish folk music. CD. Greatest hits – Jensen & Bugge. LABEL: GO Danish Folk Music GO0721. VIDEO

5-
The Secret Trio. An Armenian, a Turk and a Macedonian meet in New York. This meeting eventually led to this CD. The Secret Trio consists of Ara Dinkjian (ud), Tamer Pinarbasi (kanun) and Ismail Lumanovski (clarinet). Turkish singer Sezen Aksu can also be heard on this album. The Secret Trio skilfully shows how closely the music of Armenia, Anatolia and the Balkan region is intertwined. CD. Three of us – The Secret Trio, LABEL: Kalan (2015), code: 673. VIDEO

6- Kaiorda. Sàfar, by the Italian group Kaiorda, is a work that evokes images, sounds, smells and colors in a kaleidoscope of senses, about the journey of the soul, at the moment of change and consciousness. But it also describes a real, physical journey through the ports, to the homes of the peoples of the middle sea. It is a sea that connects and allows encounters, a sea that is conceived as a liquid continent and a crossroads of civilizations. CD. Sàfar – Kaiorda. LABEL: Kaiorda (2010), code: 5/2010. VIDEO
