Pandit Birju en Maharaj Zakir Hussain.
Tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain came into contact with his instrument as a small child. His father Alla Rakha was regarded as the best tabla player of his generation. In addition to his albums of Indian classical music, Hussain is also known as a pioneer in fusions of Western and Indian music. The Indian Kathak (one of the classical dance styles of India) exponent Pandit Birju Maharaj accompanies the music of Zakir Hussain. Pandit Birju Maharaj passed away recently in Delhi on January 17 at the age of 83.

Jazz Meets India from 1967 combines a classical Indian trio of sitar, tambura and tabla with jazz piano trio and two horns striding in between. Sitar player Dewan Motihar leads the Indian trio. The Swiss pianist Irene Schweizer has been one of Europe’s top players for years. The pieces are originals, all based on ragas, classical Indian scales each based on a particular mood, occasion, time of day, year, etc. On Brigach and Ganges, Manfred Sheaf uses the Bhimplani raga, one of the oldest in classical Indian music, dating back some 1000 years. A chamber symposium of ancient Eastern and modern Western music.
