Chamber music by Schubert – Arpeggione Sonata
In addition to Schubert’s Rondo for violin and piano and his Adagio and Rondo Concertante for piano quartet, in this hour you will hear a well-known work by Schubert for a more obscure instrument. The arpeggione – a kind of cross between a cello and a guitar – went out of fashion soon after its introduction in 1823.
The fact that we still know the arpeggione today is mostly thanks to the beautiful sonata that Schubert composed for the instrument. The piece is usually performed on cello or viola, but today you will hear a performance on the instrument it was originally written for.
