The end of the 19th century was a period of rising nationalism. In Italy, young composers were inspired by the music that had once made their country so great and important. They drew on what they considered to be the golden age of Italian music. This group became known as the Generazione dell’ottanta and formed the basis for the development of Italian music in the 20th century.
